The Opportunity

The Waldinger Corporation has been in business since 1906 and focuses on HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, plumbing, and piping. This unique, award-winning project took place at their electrical division’s facility - an established healthcare and design-build contractor with a strong presence in small, service-related, technically demanding projects.

The headquarters office has always captured attention with exposed ductwork, high ceilings, and pendant lights. Those lights had become difficult to maintain and expensive to operate, but the company wanted to change them without sacrificing the contemporary aesthetics. At the same time, as a low-voltage contractor already installing PoE and IP networks, adding PoE-based lighting was a logical next step - and Tom Mass insisted on trying it first at home.

The Solution

GENISYS intelligence was put inside Waldinger’s very own lighting pendants. These pendants are controlled, dimmed, and ColorTuned as necessary within their open-office space. Innovative Lighting supplied LED components that Waldinger installed in the existing fixtures, converting them to a PoE-powered LED solution.

The second part of the project covers private office lighting within four office spaces using Iowa-made Leaf Troffers (3.75 lbs each) so occupants can customize lighting to their exact preference. Features include sensor-controlled work spaces, scheduling, device ramping, and ColorTune mode wall switches. Waldinger’s own low-voltage team pulled the cable - right the first time, worked right the first time.

The Impact

Wattage consumption cut by 60% monthly.

Overall, wattage consumption has been cut by 60% monthly. The large pendant lights were previously about 400W each; today, they consume less than 100W per fixture. Maintenance costs improved as bulbs no longer need routine changes, and the refurbished fixtures boast an even glow without the lines and shadows that showed behind the old lenses. Perhaps just as critical: Waldinger gained first-hand experience installing PoE lighting so they can show customers how it works with confidence.

We did all the installation work ourselves - our low-voltage guys pulled the cable. They cabled it right the first time and it worked right the first time.
